SCAM COUNCIL TAX REBATE (New 02 Sep 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by Dyfed Powys Police and Powys Trading Standards.

Currently there is an alleged scam circulating householders are being telephoned by someone claiming to be from the Council suggesting that they are due a Council Tax refund following a reduction in their Council Tax Band.  The caller
is then asking for Bank account details so that the refund can be made to them.  It is a blatant scam to obtain Bank account details.  Such calls should be reported to the police.

BOGUS ADVERTISING (New 02 Sep 2010) 

This is a ringmaster message sent by Dyfed Powys Police and Powys Trading Standards.

Businesses are requested to be aware of phone calls received from company's claiming to be placing adverts in a police magazine. They are in no way affiliated with Dyfed Powys Police and all such calls should be reported to the Police.

BOGUS CHARITY COLLECTIONS  (New 02 Sep 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by  Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Dyfed Powys Police are warning the public to be aware of bogus charity collections.  Information has been received that companies claiming to be charities are
collecting unwanted clothing to sell on at a profit.  If you would like to donate items to charities please study any literature carefully before donating clothing, or take them to your local charity shop.

SCAM CALLS DEMANDING MONEY (New 22 Aug 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by  Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Dyfed Powys Police are warning the public to be aware of suspicious phone calls, several reports have been received from the public advising that they have received calls from an Indian sounding male demanding money.

The circumstances vary, in one instance the male stated that he needed money urgently, another stated that they could have a break from repaying their debts for a month and a further demanded £3,000 for a company called Future Solutions.

The receivers of the calls all dialled 1471 and the number left was 009112451111000.

Anyone receiving similar calls is advised to report to the police on the non emergency number 101 and to terminate the call.

Police also remind that no bank or personal details should be given out over the telephone.

 

BEWARE OF COLD-CALLING TRADESMEN (New 17 Aug 2010)

 

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Powys residents are advised to be aware of companies who may be operating in the Llandrindod wells area, cold calling residents offering to clean roofs and guttering. 

 

Residents are reminded that should they wish to contract for such cleaning works it is advisable to find out a full contract price,ensure cancellation rights are offered and shown on documentation and to shop around with other companies as well as obtaining feedback.

Any suspicious traders should be reported to the police on 101

 

BOGUS BT EMAIL (New 17 Aug 2010)

 

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Powys Trading Standards Service has received reports of an internet scam using the logo of British Telecomm, BT.

 

The phishing email states that BT Internet were unable to process a bill payment and provides a link to a form which requests such details as credit card numbers, expiry dates, mothers maiden name and other information. 

 

Powys Trading Standards advice is never to provide any bank account information to email enqueries.

If in doubt telephone the company alleged to have made such a request on a landline number which you have found yourself.

ADVERT SCAM (New 10 Jun 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Powys residents are advised to be on their guard after a consumer was contacted by a company purporting to be crime stoppers UK. The company demanded money for an advert that was supposedly placed in their magazine. The consumer had not placed any adverts and all of the details given by the company were fictitious.

TARMAC DRIVES - ROGUE TRADERS  (New 12 May 2010)

This is a message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Residents are advised to be on their guard against itinerants offering to tarmac drives claiming that the tarmac is surplus to requirements for the Newbridge-On-Wye bypass.

Despite a local resident refusing work 2 white males returned the following day laid some tarmac and requested a thousand pound.   

Please be extremely cautious when dealing with individuals offering work in this way. If you have any information regarding this type of incident, in particular vehicle registration numbers please report the details to the Police on 101.

BOGUS EMAILS ABOUT TAX REFUNDS  (New 27 Apr 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

It has been brought to our attention that BOGUS EMAILS are being sent to individuals offering tax refunds as long as the emails are responded to within a set period. We have spoken direct to HMRC who have advised us that under no circumstances should these emails be responded to or the attachments opened. These BOGUS EMAILS are merely a means of obtaining your bank account details.

If anyone receives one of these emails please forward it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk

Please be aware that HMRC will NEVER contact you by email requesting information.

THEFT OF DIESEL FUEL AND HEATING OIL (New 21 Apr 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by Dyfed Powys Police and Powys Trading Standards.

As you no doubt will be aware, the price of both diesel fuel and heating oil has been rising constantly over the previous months.  This has led to increases in theft of diesel fuel from vehicles and tanks located on farmyards and heating oil from storage tanks in the Ystradgynlais, Abercrave and Coelbren areas.

In an effort to combat the thefts of heating oil, the following points may assist you in preventing yourself from becoming a victim of theft.

- Be aware of your oil levels and check frequently
- Where possible keep your levels low and the same when refilling.
- Speak to your supplier with regards to a more frequent but smaller delivery.
- Locking devices should be fitted to all tanks.
- Secure the valve rather than the nozzle or hose which remain vulnerable to cutting.
- Additional security including cctv and additional lighting should be considered.

Missing Person (New - 21 Apr 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.
Female person, aged 29 years, 5'8, slim build with long dark hair.  Female is wearing leggings, Ugg boots, grey cardigan, pink sweater and pink top.

The female was last seen earlier today (12/04/10) in the Brecon area.

We are concerned for her safety and well being.  Any information please contact Dyfed Powys Police on 101.

BANKING SCAM (New - 21 Apr 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Powys Trading Standards have received a number of complaints from members of the public who have received letters purporting to be from a Japanese banker by the name of Akimaro Akit. Please be aware that this is a scam and members of the public are advised not to contact the sender or give out any personal or financial information.

FALSE REPRESENTATION (New - 24 Mar 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Persons are asked to be aware with regards to a possible scam.

We have had several reports of organisations receiving phone calls purporting to be a representative of Dyfed Powys Police and selling advertising space in a Crime Prevention magazine.

Please be aware that if you receive any similar calls, this is nothing to do with Dyfed Powys Police.

PRIZE SCAM (New - 23 Mar 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Residents in Builth Wells have been targeted by telephone stating that they will receive a prize of £700 if they provide their bank details.  One resident was 91 years old and the call was handled by her carer.

If you are contacted by an unsolicited call ensure you do not give bank details to the caller.

DOMAIN/WEBSITE RENEWAL SCAM (New - 09 Feb 2010)

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Powys Trading Standards is warning Businesses and Consumers across Powys to be on their guard against unsolicited letters requesting renewal of domain names/web-site addresses. The letters are being sent to those who have existing contracts for registration with alternative Companies, thus causing confusion.

Please ensure you read these letters thoroughly to avoid renewal fees being sent to the wrong Company.

COUNCIL TAX SCAM (New - 04 Feb 2010)

This is a message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

Residents are warned to ignore telephone calls offering a rebate to their council tax with Powys County Council, if they provide their bank details. Powys Trading Standards warn that this is a scam and no details are to be provided.

Recent calls have been made in the East Radnor area.

SUSPICIOUS FEMALE (New - 17 Dec 09)

 

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.
 
Dyfed Powys Police have received a report of a suspicious female in the Llandrindod Wells area. 

The female is described as aged approx 45-50 with short dark hair and slight build, the female

was wearing a British Gas jacket and stated that she worked for British Gas and had a laptop

and folder with her.
 
It has not been established whether this is a genuine representative of
British Gas at this time.
 
The only other information is the female asked to use the toilet and was
in the toilet for some time and after the female had left the occupiers
noticed she had opened the window.
 
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dyfed Powys Police on
non emergency number 101.

This is a ringmaster message sent by Dyfed Powys Police and Powys Trading Standards.

BOGUS BANK CHARGES RECOVERY (New - 02 Dec 2009)

 

This is a Ringmaster message sent by Heddlu Dyfed Powys Police and Powys Trading Standards.


Powys residents should be aware of phone calls received from a company known as Wilson and Bateman.  This company will request bank details in order that they may attempt to recover bank charges on your behalf.  This company will however charge callers approximately £60 for this service.  Although this is a legitimate company there is no guarantee that customers will receive any compensation.

 

DEBT RECOVERY FRAUD (New - 02 Dec 2009)

 

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.

 

Powys residents are advised to be on their guard after a Powys resident was contacted from someone purporting to be from the court service or a local court.  The caller informed the resident that a court judgement had been issued against them and bailiffs have been ordered to visit their property with the intention of removing goods.  The number given by the caller was 0843 0301 839.  It is understood that this number is not connected with the court service and is in fact a private debt collection company.

 

If you have been contacted by someone giving this number you are advised to contact your local police station or Trading Standards office.

 

STOLEN GALVANISED GATES (New - 02 Dec 2009)

 

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.
 
Police are advising people to be vigilant after receiving several reports of thefts of galvanized gates particularly in the Llandrindod/Brecon area.
 
Anyone with any information should contact Dyfed Powys Police on non emergency contact number 101.

 

COLD CALLING ODD JOBBERS (New - 02 Dec 2009)

 

This is a Ringmaster message sent on the behalf of Heddlu Dyfed Powys Police and Powys Trading Standards.


Residents of Powys are advised to be aware of persons cold calling at properties enquiring as to whether they would like odd jobs completed, such as power-washing their drive.  Residents are advised to politely decline these people and to report any suspicions to Dyfed Powys Police.

 

BOGUS HOLIDAY OFFERS (New - 26 Nov 09)

 

This is a Ringmaster message sent on behalf of Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.
 
Powys residents are advised to be on their guard against unsolicited telephone calls from Companies offering free holidays. You are told that all you have to do is to go along to a presentation to find out more. The promise of exciting and great value holidays all over the world can be very tempting.  However the reality is often different. Although not all Holiday clubs and Timeshares are disreputable,  to avoid being caught by a bogus Company :
 
    Always read the paperwork thoroughly
    Don't sign anything under pressure
    Be sure it's exactly what you want.


EURO LOTTERY SCAM (New - 24 Nov 09)

 

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.
 
Powys residents are advised to be wary as a number of residents have received scam mail from Euro million lottery international. Given that the last two Euro lottery winners reside in Wales it seems the scam is
targeting residents in Powys with the aim of cashing in on the recent legitimate lottery win. Please disregard these scam letters and avoid giving out any personal or bank details.

 

BOGUS INVOICES (New - 24 Nov 09)

 

This is a ringmaster message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys police.
 
Powys Trading Standards is warning businesses, schools, hotels and nursing homes across Powys to watch out for bogus invoices that claim to be from directory publisher Yell in relation to its products and services.
 
The warning comes following a number of complaints regarding receipt of bogus £500 invoices.
 
Bogus order forms are sent by e-mail or fax and contain look-a-like "Yellow Pages" branding. Customers who return the form subsequently receive invoices and requests for payment.
 
Yell customers should be particularly alert to any correspondence they receive containing contact, or bank account details in Holland or Germany.

 

DOORSTEP TRADERS (New - 19 Nov 09)

 

This is a message sent by Dyfed Powys Police and Powys Trading Standards.

Residents of Powys are asked to be aware of cold callers operating throughout the county selling double glazing.

These firms often use high-pressure sales tactics to entice consumers into contracts.

Remember :-

 

If you contract on your doorstep you are entitled to receive written cancellation rights with a 7 days cooling off period during which you can legally change your mind.

 

If the contract begins before the end of the cooling off period then you need to sign the paperwork to say you agree to the work beginning and thereby waive your rights to the cooling off period.

POSTAL SCAM (New - 19 Nov 09)

This is a message sent by Powys Trading Standards and Dyfed Powys Police.
 
Residents, businesses and partners are warned about a Postal Scam currently circulating across the County.
 
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 09066611911 (a Premium rate number).
 
DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize (South America).

If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed fifteen pounds for the phone call.
 
If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072 396 655.

TELEPHONE SCAM

This is a ringmaster message sent by Dyfed Powys Police and Powys Trading Standards.


A new telephone 'scam' is circulated where an alleged representative of BT rings up and informs the customer he was going to disconnect me because of an unpaid bill. He states that a payment is needed immediately of £31.00, or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.
 
He gave his name as a very 'English' John Peacock, with a very 'African' accent and phone number - 08000800152.
 
THIS IS A SCAM.  Do not provide payment details over the phone to such persons.
